There are mistakes, mis-steps and over-reaches along the way but refreshingly he isn’t playing it completely safe. Raury’s own take vacillates between earnest pop songs that ask burning questions, like the All we Need of the album title - which unsurprisingly still turns out to be love, and his slant on smooth hip hop jams.
Raury all we need album full#
On his debut album All We Need (Columbia Records), the transition comes full circle, with each of the 14 tracks displaying his wide-ranging talent. This isn’t new territory Arrested Development’s folky handclap boom bap is an obvious touchstone, as is the freakier work of Outkast or Pharrel’s hip pop productions. Within one song, rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer Raury can seamlessly transition from a folk-tinged ballad, to spoken word, electronic sonic effects, and vocal distortions. Whether it’s met is debatable, there’s certainly no lack of ambition on an album that sets out to save the world on its first two tracks, over upfront acoustic guitars and plenty of hip hop’s rumbling sub bass.
The album finishes up with the uprising sound of Friends, featuring Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello.Ĭlearly a young man with an unapologetic attitude about his surroundings, Raury’s All We Need promotes altruistic love, peace and unity in an unexpected approach. Not quite the completely fresh newcomer anymore, after all Lorde picked him out for her Hunger Games soundtrack, 19 year old Atlanta rapper cum pop folk singer, Raury, arrives at his debut with much expectation and hype. With lyrics “You better run, run from the devil,” and an intense driving drum, Raury’s created a stark contrast between the two tracks both lyrically and melodically. This is particularly evident on tracks like Wooden Manor II, Trap Tears and Love Is Not A Four Letter Word.Īlso brought into the mix is Devil’s Whisper, a gloomier, somewhat sinister companion to God’s Whisper from Indigo Child. Raury blends together elements of electronic, folk, rock and hip hop to create a truly unique sound.Īmid all of the interweaving genres, All We Need’sfolk and indie rap elements stand out the most. All We Need, his first proper album, was released in October 2015 with appearances from Big K.R.I.T. From the title track’s sonic soundscapes and the tribal drum beats of Revolution and Forbidden Knowledge, to the light acoustics and delicate vulnerability of Mama and Kingdom Come, the album reveals the singer/songwriter’s extremely diverse range. Raury is a free-spirited singer, rapper, guitarist, songwriter, and producer who was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia, roughly 20 miles outside Atlanta.
Much like Indigo Child, the album finds the young songwriter exploring many contrasting music styles. Great song, combination of different parts, I would cut the intro a bit just to make the rest of it accessible to people. He’s bound to draw even more attention with his debut album All We Need. UPDATE: Raury has released the music video for his stellar single, Friends, which features Tom Morello. From out of nowhere, the tape established Raury as one to watch, his big ideas and ability to seamlessly move through genres gaining attention around the globe. From Atlanta, Georgia comes Raury, the man behind the critically acclaimed mixtape Indigo Child released in 2014.
